Avoiding failures caused by oxidation during lead-free soldering – whether by reflow or wave machines – ideally requires an all-nitrogen processing environment. Although this element is plentiful, handling and storing it have been a major concern for PCB assemblers. Many now realize gas cylinders may no longer be the answer as they are costly – and hazardous due to high-pressure containment. Since cylinders are managed by outside suppliers, critical on-time delivery may also be affected. Unquestionably, a superior alternative is an owned and operated nitrogen-generating system.
